SUMMARY:Exhibition: Women’s Land Army
DESCRIPTION:War affected every section of society, not just the military. More food needed to be produced and, as men were recruited into the armed services, there were fewer hands to do the work. At the same time, farmers were being pressed to convert more land to arable from pasture. Women had always been involved in agriculture, horticulture and forestry, but now their contribution was critical…\nThis exhibition will explore the practicalities of how the Land Army was organised, the key figures involved and some of the challenges that were encountered along the way. Despite the misgivings, and sometimes the hostility, of politicians, civil servants, landowners, farmers, trade unions and foresters, who doubted that women would be able to undertake the range of farm work, and very often failed to give WLA leaders and volunteers the credit and recognition they, the women of ‘the Cinderella service’, deserved.\nWith thanks to Dr John Godfrey for his writing and research for this exhibition.\nThe exhibition has been generously sponsored by Oakland Grange and Oakland Court Care Homes and other donors.\nImage: For a Healthy, Happy Job Join the Women’s Land Army: UK Government, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons\n \nEntry to the exhibition is included in your Museum entry ticket.\nThere will be times when it is not open which will be listed here:\nThe exhibition will not be open on the following dates.\nPlease double check if you are not sure, just call us 01903 885866\nEach Wednesday morning\nSeptember\nThe Museum will be closed from 11.15am-2.30pm on 11 September\nMonday 21st 1-4pm\nFriday 25th 10am-12 noon\nOctober\nTuesday 6th 10am-2pm\nFriday 8th 10am-1pm\nFriday 9th closed all day\nSaturday 10th 2pm-4pm\n15th – 29th inclusive, closed all day\nNovember\nFriday 6th 1pm-4pm\nSaturday 7th closed all day\nTuesday 10th 10-12 noon\nWednesday 11th to Thursday 12th closed all day\nSaturday 14th 12.30-2pm\nMonday 16th 1-4pm\nTuesday 17th 10am-1pm\nFriday 20th to Saturday 21st closed all day\nMonday 23rd 1-4pm\nTuesday 24th 10am-1pm\nThursday 26th closed all day\nSaturday 28th closed all day\nDecember\nThursday 3rd closed all day\nFriday 4th the museum will be closed 11am until 1.30pm\nSaturday 5th closed 10am-1pm\nTuesday 8th 10am-12 noon\nThursday 10th to Sunday 13th closed all day\nMonday 21st 1-4pm\nThe Museum will be closed from 24th to 1st January inclusive.\nApart from being open on 29th and 30th December\n
