Talk Sussex Art with Peter Beckingham

A JOURNEY TO SEE SUSSEX ART FROM BIGNOR TO BRIGHTON

Sussex-based writer and speaker Peter Beckingham will take his audience on a journey through 2000 years of great art in the county, from the beautifully preserved mosaics at Bignor and Fishborne, and medieval frescoes in tiny South Downs churches, to the vivid paintings of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant around Charleston and Firle. Peter will also look at the influence of Arundel on important British illustrations and paintings, and describe the influence of the town and county on English Masters Constable and Turner. In his wide-ranging but accessible, non-academic talk Peter will finish with the impact of Sussex on famous 20th century  landscape  painters including  Eric Ravilious and Paul Nash.

Peter launched his second book on Sussex art, ‘Sussex Showcase: 2000 years of great art from Bignor to Brighton’ to a sell-out audience of over 100 at the Petworth Festival at the end of last year. His first book on South Downs art was described by ‘Sussex Life’ magazine as “a gem, well-researched, beautifully illustrated and hugely informative”.

Peter is a former diplomat whose positions included Deputy High Commissioner to India, Ambassador to the Philippines, and Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands. He is an annual guest speaker on international affairs on Cunard cruise ships.

Peter will be selling his books at the end of the talk in aid of a Motor Neurone Disease charity.
